  • Modelling the impacts of sea level rise on coastal morphodynamics

The impacts of sea level rise over the next century are likely to alter the morphodynamics of coastal systems. There is an estimated 40% of the world’s population living in these areas, so it is crucial that we are able to predict how these systems might evolve in order to inform sustainable management and build resilience. The use of numerical models is commonplace for such research, but centennial-scale coastal models are still in their infancy. CEM2D has therefore been developed, aimed at simulating key coastal behaviours, elucidating controls on their evolution and exploring the impact that climate change may have at this scale. Results to date demonstrate an interesting relationship between rates of sea level rise and sediment supply on the life-cycle and existence of depositional features along the coast. As sea levels rise, the ability of these features to sustain themselves is dependent upon the volume of material feeding the landform. Further work will delve deeper into this relationship and explore other influential factors that might drive coastal evolution in the face of climate change. Through this research, we aim to improve our understanding of these systems and enhance our predictive capabilities.
