We've got it all - learning the integrated flood risk management

Flood risk alleviation scheme in Bramingham (north Luton) has got it all - 700 properties at significant flood risk from surface water from arable area outside of the borough boundary, proposed development site for 4,000 houses in the feeding catchment, fluvial flood risk from a chalk stream with limited capacity, perched aquifer with shallow water table that is raising whilst the principal chalk aquifer is receding, potential for reservoir flooding and local community that is rather unimpressed with recent sustainable drainage scheme installed by Thames Water.

Politically, the neighbouring Councils did not always agree, however recent understanding under the duty to cooperate and especially potential new link for the strategic development present opportunities for addressing flood risk comprehensively. Creative community engagement campaign is also underway with elements of citizen science, evening talks from local universities and dedicated community engagement officer supported by Environment Agency funding.

The case study will demonstrate how two Councils  Luton and Central Bedfordshire, two water companies Thames and Anglian Water and two local teams of Environment Agency (Anglian Central and Herts and North London) need to keep working together to deliver a truly integrated scheme with innovative ways of engagement of the local stakeholders and community.
