What are you afraid of? Making better use of water and land management
The author will present a discussion around some current inadequacies in land use management and flood risk, drawing on recent cases of large-scale sterilisation of watercourse corridors.Closely coupling innovation and risk management can be a highly effective way of meeting the needs of invested parties and stakeholders. To achieve this it is necessary to promote flexible views on design and planning and overcome negative perceptions of risk. Case studies will be used to underpin the key conclusions, which will highlight the benefits of both soft and hard engineering, illustrate the value of learning from international ways of working and address what we can do to make these changes. Examples will be given of how, through appropriate early-stage planning and design, currently perceived risks can be viewed as opportunities to creatively integrate water into the wider environment and built form
The key themes will be centred on where opportunities exist to take a more integrated approach to water, flood and land use management along with shared ownership and action
