Biodiversity in the city : a SuDS perspective

Why aren't we seizing the opportunity of combining our visions for greener, healthier cities with managing surface water and the emerging impacts of climate change? How do we best capitalise on the building blocks of water management and green infrastructures to create a more biodiverse, safer, sustainable and functional urban environment?

Expanding on the emerging white paper Biodiversity in the City and our work on future trends facing the built environment we will explore the broader benefits of SuDS over and beyond the management of surface water runoff. Exploring real life examples we will uncover the services multifunctional SuDS provide us, from health and wellbeing and social cohesion to helping mitigate the impacts of climate change and increasing resilience while improving biodiversity. We will set out what we are doing well; what opportunities we might be missing and how to take advantage of them; and what tools are available to help us understand and communicate these benefits so that they are fully considered in the decision making process. We will conclude by setting out a vision for a rounded and integrated approach to SuDS and green infrastructure in general as part of our urban ecosystem and flood risk management strategy.
