Using the past to prepare for the future

To many people our historic buildings and places can seem fragile and vulnerable to harm from flooding. While flooding certainly presents risks to our heritage there is also much we can learn from our heritage about living with water. From landscape scale perspectives to individual buildings understanding the relationship between people, places and water through time can help us plan for a more resilient future. Drawing on examples of Historic England's work this paper will look at what a greater understanding of the past can teach us about preparing for and living with flooding. The examples presented will include research by Historic England, and our partners, into how traditional building materials respond to flooding, and showcase some exciting projects which are seeking to put this into practice in traditionally constructed buildings at risk of flooding.
