The challenge of flood risk management in constrained urban environments - Perry Barr and Witton

To be presented with Rachel Kelly (EA) and Simon White (Jacobs):

The Perry Barr and Witton scheme provides flood risk management to benefit vulnerable communities in Birmingham. Protection is provided through a combination of measures in both in an inner city urban reach and an upstream flood storage solution in a sensitive ecological environment. This presentation will detail how the project team has:

- Expanded an upstream storage to address the effects of climate change and manage major design challenges in the urban environment;

- worked with local artists to engage the community to develop the design finishes for the flood walls, some of which are up to 2m high.

- collaborated with the RSPB and other organisations to develop proposals which recognised the regional importance of the recreational and ecological environment within the original storage area.

The urban design finishes consist of an innovative graphic cladding combining themes and words important to the community. When combined with other measures including a new viewing platform, this has created a legacy of improved urban amenity through integrated design.<br />

A package of mitigation measures providing long-term outcomes and addressing short-term effects during construction in a highly constrained environment. Ultimately the major stakeholder, the RSPB raised no comment on the planning application when submitted.
