Fairbourne : adaptation beyond engineering

Fairbourne: Moving Forward is a pioneering multi-agency project, implementing the Shoreline Management Plan (2) in Fairbourne, North Wales. The community (c1200 residents) cannot be saved from the risk of flooding and will be decommissioned and returned to the sea in 37 years. To plan for decommissioning, the project is producing a Masterplan, conducting research, identifying problems and solutions in relation to flood risk, impact of flooding on the built infrastructure and the social and economic impact (including relocations/dispersal of the current community along with the impact this will have on communities receiving residents from Fairbourne). The project, which is entangled within the community, is establishing a Community Interest Company (CIC) to reinstate a level of choice for residents wishing to move from the community but are unable to do so due to blight on property prices. The CIC will purchase properties from those wishing to sell and use these properties to alleviate pressure on the demand for social housing. Leading this pioneering project, it is hoped that work undertaken in Fairbourne will lead to changes and development of new legislation to support communities across the UK and further afield, as the effects of climate change increasingly impact our communities.
