Hesketh Out Marsh East - working in partnership

The Hesketh Out Marsh East (HOME) managed realignment scheme is a partnership project between the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), Natural England and the Environment Agency. HOME is located on the River Ribble estuary downstream of Preston in Lancashire. The scheme has recently been completed and provides a 1 in 200 year (0.5% AEP) standard of flood protection to 143 properties including an allowance for future climate change with sea level rise. The outer flood embankment has recently been breached to enable 154 hectares of valuable saltmarsh priority habitat to be created.  HOME is currently the only example of coastal climate change adaptation being undertaken along the coast of North West England. The presentation will describe how the successful completion of this scheme has only been possible due to working in partnership with shared objectives, financial commitment and trust. The management of risk and successful resolution of the challenges faced by the partnership team during the project will be highlighted. The experience and lessons learnt by the team will be applicable to similar future partnership projects.
