Not just a flood risk management scheme - Crindau, Newport

Crindau FRMS is the largest flood scheme constructed by Natural Resources Wales. Crindau is subject to significant risk of tidal flooding with 660 properties at risk. The community has waited over 10 years for the scheme due to lack of progress of a proposed regeneration project. The community is deprived and vulnerable and has a culture of drugs and petty crime. The scheme embraces the well-being goals of the new law in Wales: Well-being of future generations (Wales) Act 2015. The scheme will benefit the health and wellbeing of individuals by improving the local environment and will create a new amenity area. An embankment will run through the park and grassed terraces will be created for people to sit on and watch matches on the playing field. The park will also benefit from new foot and cycle paths trees and shrubs. We are supporting a community led project to install raised flower beds, and improvements have been made at the local primary school (forest school area). We have knocked down derelict buildings along our alignment that blighted the area. We will make the community safer by installing additional lighting, railings around the children’s playground, removing secluded areas where drug deals take place. Crindau will be a better place to live in after completion of the scheme. This will be a joint presentation with Mr George Baker, Technical Director, JBA Consulting.
