From floats & drones &citizens with mobile phones: innovation in flood measurement techniques
Exactly how much water is in the river and flood plain; how big is this flood? these are some of the more important and difficult questions we face. Reliable, accurate hydrometric measurements are vital to Flood and Coastal Risk Management. Our Hydrometry and Telemetry teams provide much of the underpinning information for flood forecasting, warning and response; for modelling to understand flood risk and inform design and operation of defences and other strategies to manage and mitigate flood impacts.
Recent major floods in the UK and around the world are increasingly exceeding capabilities of established monitoring networks and technologies, highlighting a need to develop new solutions.
This presentation considers EA's growing needs for flood measurements, examining how we're at the heart of a global network driving the development of innovative technologies that can measure even extreme floods safely, faster and better than ever before. Specific challenges of flooding from intense rainfall are addressed, with new camera-based solutions developed with Newcastle University.
The work is helping define and implement a new FCRM commission for monitoring needs and deliver the improvements and efficiencies identified in our Flood Incident Management Plan (Saving Lives and Livelihoods), as well as benefit the wider UK economy.
