When will the internet stop flooding? The age of connected flood management

Surface water flooding has been a major contributor to recent flooding events. Tackling surface water flooding at source has been recognised as one of the most efficient methods to mitigate the flooding risk and its damage. Smart dual-purpose real-time rainwater management systems provide a cost effective and efficient solution to prevent CSOs from overflowing, while providing rainwater for non-potable water use. Built upon Internet of Things technologies, these low cost and reliable rainwater management systems provide much needed ‘monitoring’ capabilities to the drainage and sewerage networks (assisting with performance assessments), while controlling the maximum flow permitted through CSOs in order to mitigate risk of flooding. The solution is developed considering local requirements and drivers, and can contribute to local water supplies.

The flood management industry needs to accelerate adoption of these connected technologies for monitoring, data collection, communication and data analytics; as a cost effective, reliable alternative to traditional (often costly) SCADA systems. The presentation will look at the state of the art, and draw on experience from similar markets where such technologies have recently become accepted as best practice.
