Hull Plus: Linking FCERM and wider benefits through innovative funding approach

Hull City Council and the Environment Agency are working in partnership using European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) delivering FCRM, economic and environmental benefits in Hull through delivery of the Hull Plus project. The project is delivering accelerated flood defence improvements to failing defences along the River. The River Hull is an underused asset for the city which historically provided focus for employment and economic growth. The scheme aims to regenerate the river reconnecting the city's waterfront and cultural past, providing attractive river environments attracting further investment. The use of ERDF Priority Axis (PA) grants allows partnership working linking city wide strategic approaches looking at existing infrastructure and assets establishing utilisation of these delivering multiple benefits addressing issues outside of flood risk gaining different funding sources. The improvement of the defences brings potential for addressing surface water flood risk alongside fluvial whilst providing habitat and amenity value. The use of ERDF has allowed FCRM benefits for future years to be brought forward and delivered alongside other works providing more efficient delivery and protecting more properties sooner. The PA grants focus on climate change adaptation, risk prevention and management (PA5), and on preserving and protecting the environment and promoting resource efficiency (PA6). <br />
