  • Increasing the nations resilience and preparedness to widespread flooding: the improvements in the latest Cabinet Office National Risk Assessment and Register

As a nation we are at risk from many hazards and threats ranging from flooding, flu pandemics to power failures. The Cabinet Office National Risk Assessment and Register process brings together the latest assessments of key hazards and threats to increase our resilience and preparedness as a nation. Working in close partnership, the Environment Agency, Defra and our supply chain partners have translated advances in technology, statistical theory and understanding of the drivers for widespread and severe flooding into national scale assessment and practical tools for operational flood risk management.

This talk will present the key findings from this research:

 1)            How we used state-of-the-art methodology to develop plausible, extreme but realistic scenarios for widespread flooding to inform the NRA/NRR and what it means for policy makers, emergency planners and responders.

 2)            How practical tools can be applied more readily by trained practitioners for joint probability analysis in operational flood risk management, with case studies and supporting guidance.

Through this work we have a much more comprehensive picture of the scale and impacts of plausible widespread and extreme inland, coastal and, for the first time, surface water flooding, with new information on their impacts, aiding strategic emergency planning and capacity building.
