Great Expectations: Managing the hidden risks of partnership working
This presentation looks at some key concepts of partnership working, beginning with the idea of partnership itself, and considers how differences in perceptions can influence outcomes. It draws on direct examples from my own experience of partnership working in West Somerset with vulnerable residents, flood volunteers, town and parish flood groups, risk management authorities and other stakeholders (FWAGSW, NFU). I look in particular at partners' perceptions of themselves and each other and at the different expectations these generate. Fundamental differences in expectations may emerge only at times of crisis or they may contribute to the gradual breakdown of cooperative working. They may be major or trivial. We therefore need to find a way to transform wishful thinking about partnership working into a pragmatic reality with a workable and transparent social contract between partners. i end by looking at some positive mechanisms for successful partnerships that have been set up in West Somerset and try to identify factors that have contributed to their success while being realistic about their limitations.
