River Mersey Warrington Flood Risk management Scheme - partnership working

The Environment Agency's River Mersey Warrington Flood Risk Management Scheme has increased the standard of flood protection to over 2000 residential properties in Warrington through the construction of 7.2 km of new flood walls and embankments.

£34million has been invested over the last 5 years in a rolling programme of works which has provided a 1 in 100 year (1% AEP) standard of flood protection from the River Mersey, Spittle Brook and Padgate Brook. The works have also included the provision of a 1 in 1000 year (0.1% AEP) standard of protection to a major Electricity Grid Substation; the creation of 5Ha of new wildlife habitat; improved accessibility and visibility of the River Mersey and general improvements to the amenity and recreational value of the area. Partnership working has been essential to the success of this project from establishing the right project team from a range of consultants and contractors; securing the necessary external funding from Warrington Borough Council and Scottish Power to justify the scheme viability; and working with local community groups, schools and residents to get buy-in and support and to ensure that the benefits to the community are maximised and are aligned with local goals and objectives.
