Flood Narratives

This presentation discusses Flood Narratives, an ERSC funded research study focused on developing new tools for recording and communicating the consequences of flooding. The project aims to enhance a number of the tools and techniques from the ˜Retrofitting Resilience study, combining a variety of visual and physical media for mapping hazards, and communicating consequences spatially and temporally. Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, and Staveley in Cumbria are the communities being engaged in this study. Great Yarmouth was selected, as it is archetypal of a community that has not flooded in recent years but it at risk of flooding. During the January 2017 tidal surge, few residents adhered to warnings and evacuated as advised. The ˜Flood Narratives toolkit" will help raise awareness by informing residents of the different consequences that could be endured. Staveley was selected, as having flooded severely in 2015 the EA is interested in understanding the ways the community were affected. Here the toolkit is used to record key hazard, actions and consequences that took place. From this, bespoke and collective narratives are compiled. The study is being run as a collaboration between: The Environmental Design Studio, the Environment Agency, Public Health England and the University of Cambridge.
