Improving post flood clean up

After Storm Desmond we saw millions of pounds spent refurbishing homes to a standard that will not reduce the impact of future flooding and will not improve homes energy efficiency.  We saw thousands of tonnes of waste disposed of, often unnecessarily and little done to mitigate any future impacts on climate change.  We are aware of no industry guidance had linked refurbishment with improving energy efficiency.  Rarely are the particular needs of older buildings being considered – and indeed much harm could be done by inappropriate flood resilience solutions. We will outline how, through accessible online tools and resources we are helping householders to understand their building and identify measures to make it more energy efficient and weather resilient; how research we have commissioned from URBED has identified the drivers and possible solutions to improve post flood clean up and refurbishment and to illustrate how all these elements link up in the town of Appleby which suffered extensive flooding and where we are working with Historic England, the local authority and local community.’
