Updating the National Reservoirs Flood Maps (planning and response)

The new Reservoirs Flood Map Project is currently producing an updated set of flood maps for large raised reservoirs (with a capacity >25,000m3), in England, which depict the hazard posed by the reasonable worst case dam failure scenario at each reservoir for both dry and wet scenarios. These maps are based on a new modelling specification and the latest and most accurate data available about the reservoirs and their downstream environment, so they more accurately represent the potential hazards posed by reservoir failure than previous maps used for this purpose. The presentation will demonstrate how the Updated Reservoir Flood Maps:

  • Provides an increased quality of modelling in comparison to the previous maps
  • Provide better response information for Local Authority Emergency Planners and the Emergency Services, this will allow more robust and effective emergency plans and responses
  • Develops  better links between the Agency and its partners
  • Underpins the Environment work to assess and designate risk to all reservoirs that fall under the Reservoirs Act 1975
  • Will enable the Agency to report completion of the first revision of hazard and flood maps (for reservoirs) required by the Flood Risk Regulations 2009
  • Inform local authorities in development planning
