Partnership working at Dawlish Warren beach management scheme
Dawlish Warren in Devon is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation, and there are legal drivers to return the area to favourable conditions. Dawlish Warren beach management scheme comprised of beach recharge, gabion removal, new revetment wall, new and refurbished groynes and provision of a sand "hard neck" asset along a 1.5km long stretch of beach. Much of the work had to be constructed during the busy tourist season and via very restrictive access routes to the beach. The presentation will focus on the strategy we collectively developed through partnership working with the EA, the Local Authority and Town Council for the scheme. Our objective was to maintain good relationships with the local holiday parks and businesses to ensure a successful delivery of the scheme within programme and with minimum disruption to the local community and tourists. This success of our approach is reflected in the feedback received from the local Town Council Councillor: Congratulations to your entire team on a magnificent achievement. As a Dawlish Town Councillor, I've been a grateful (if undeserving) recipient of thanks to be passed on to you from many residents and visitors - all of us are very impressed with the enormous job you've carried out with such little pain to the locals and with the magnificent result. Nobody can remember the beach looking so good! Many thanks, too, for the regular flow of interesting information on the planning and progress of the project"
