Innovative management of coastal erosion for critical rail infrastructure

Extensive damage to critical railway infrastructure occurred between Dawlish and Teignmouth on the Great Western Mainline during 2014.

This Paper outlines the development of a resilient long term and sustainable solution to mitigate coastal erosion, estuarine flooding and significant geotechnical instability along the Brunelian Dawlish Coastal Railway.

The proposed solution is an internationally innovative response involving major coastal reclamation and geotechnical remediation of sea cliffs and has been developed through extensive Environmental Assessment and Research; Marine & Littoral Modelling; Coastal and Geotechnical Engineering and Design and extensive local stakeholder and Government engagement”.
