  • Working with natural processes on our coasts

Working with Natural Processes is being promoted as an innovative approach to managing shorelines. Whilst this is a relatively new term, the underlying concept is familiar to coastal engineers who have long recognised the benefits of beaches in managing flood and erosion risk. Nevertheless, a greater appreciation of ecology and landscape in our wellbeing is driving the exploration of management techniques which make the most of our natural assets.

This paper will highlight how WWNP fits with approaches being developed elsewhere, such as Nature-based solutions developed by US Army Corps of Engineers and ˜building with nature” concepts developed in the Netherlands. It explains the range of approaches that WWNP encompasses and how they fit within the four generic shoreline management policies.
