Re-formative engineering solutions for coastal and fluvial protection

The EA recognizes the need to find an effective replacement for diminishing and scarce resource supplies of tropical hardwood, used to construct groynes, jetties, harbour walls and in fluvial applications drainage channels, weirs and sluice gates. Our research led us to develop the use of polymer composites, made from mixed plastic packaging waste.  They have been in use for 18 years in Germany, particularly in marine and fluvial applications proving their value in terms of physical and environmental performance. They are unaffected by marine boring grubs, bacteria, insects or vermin and are ecologically safe.  With more than 3,500 wood groynes around the UK coastline the need to find a longer lasting, low cost alternative is answered by use of the process technology we have developed to make these engineered composites.  With design and trials successfully completed the automated process is able to deliver reinforced, structurally engineered products that match and exceed desired performance levels for these products and many other applications.  The main objective achieved is the competitive cost compared to hardwood, treated softwood and concrete products.  It places this technology at the forefront ready to open up large-scale end uses in the U.K. and macro-scale markets globally.
