An online cost-effective solution for mapping flooding using satellite earth observation data

Pixalytics Ltd is offering a cost effective solution for the provision of floodwater maps and information through an online portal with a simple user interface. The core product is based on Sentinel-1 data, which offers an all-weather solution cost-effective solution through automated processing. There are savings compared to commercial imagery, however the solution can also ingest data from commercial satellites to provide higher spatial resolution outputs and an increase in temporal frequency. It was developed from a proof of concept project Pixalytics undertook within a Space for Smarter Government Programme in 2015/16, supporting the Environment Agency to assess the suitability of satellite derived information in urban areas. Our web-based interface reduces the need for specialist knowledge by providing the user with clear information and graphical maps. By processing data over a period of time, the changes in floodwater extent become visible and areas of permanent water can be separated, in addition it allows the creation of temporal maps that indicate areas of increased flood risk. The flood maps can be purchased as one-off products, or a time series, with the lower cost approach enabling access by a wider range of users that can be both individuals as well as organisations.
