Simon Crowther was flooded back in 2007, and has made it his mission to help others avoid the upheaval, expense and stress that flooding causes. His presentation focuses on technological changes outside of the flood protection industry (e.g social media) and how this has changed the way communities react to emergencies such as flooding.  Back in 2007 Twitter had only just been founded and wasn't widely used, and Facebook was just becoming used by the Younger Generations. Neither were popular. In 2007 Facebook had 50 million users. 37x less than today's figure at 1.86 billion!Social media simply did not have the mass power it has these days.

In the 2007 floods, the whole community pulled together. I've have heard people say that being flooded can almost be a good time (like a war effort)  you meet new neighbours, and people club together! The real hardship is when the waters subside, the camera crews leave and the clean-up begins. This is where we saw social media proving so powerful in the 2014 floods. Facebook groups were formulated, with people offering cleaning products, sofas, accommodation, and help to those affected.
