Planning and response- flood resilience and response

One of the key ambitions in the Environment Agency's Flood Incident Management Plan 2015-2020 is the move to a forecast led operational response to flood incidents to save lives and livelihoods.

For some communities at risk of flooding, traditional flood defences are not suitable to mitigate this risk for a range of reasons. However temporary flood defences such as temporary barriers and mobile pumps can be an effective alternative for reducing the risk.

The National Flood Resilience Review funding has allowed the Environment Agency to significantly increase its capability to deploy temporary barriers and high volume pumps.

To provide effective incident response these assets need to be delivered and deployed anywhere in England within 12 hours, which presents a significant challenge.

Partnership has been the key to overcoming this, from the Met Office and the Environment Agency partnership, the Flood Forecasting Centre. Our partnership with the Stobart Group to provide logistics support to deploy the assets. The partnership in deployment with the military, our contractors and our Field Operations teams. And most importantly our partnerships with communities and local authorities in developing detailed local deployment plans which everyone supports. It's partnerships that's turning a huge potential benefit into a reality.
